Morro Bay

We got back from our Morro Bay camping trip. Things went pretty well, or at least as well as could be expected camping with a 7 month old baby. Nathan didn't sleep as well as he does at home (which isn't very good to begin with), but you can't blame him. Gary or I don't usually sleep very well when we're camping either. I put in him a sleep sack and a blanket next to me, but he ended up only getting into a decent sleep nestled next to me in my sleeping bag. We went on a short hike along the coast and visited the natural history museum, which was surprisingly high tech and fun.

We also stopped in Santa Barbara to visit my grandfather. Overall it was a good trip and I'm glad we did it. More photos of the camping trip and our visit with George and Eileen are posted online.

Mallory and Ari are visiting. We took some family photos in the backyard today. Most of them someone was looking goofy, but a few turned out nice.

Baby movies

Although I haven't been going to see movies in the theater at all lately, I just found out about these two cool "family friendly" programs at our local theater. Baby Pictures, movies for adults but with dim lighting, low sound, changing stations, set up in mind to bring your baby to the theater, every Tuesday at 11am. They also have Kid Toons, newish G rated movies every Saturday and Sunday morning. I really like the idea of designated showings where you don't have to be embarrassed if your baby starts crying, but you also can't get mad at all the other kids making noise either.

feeling better

I'm mostly feeling better. My appetite is less than usual, but at least my innards feel normal again. I'm starting to get excited and anxious about our camping trip this coming weekend. We're planning on spending a night or two in Morro Bay. We haven't gone on a vacation since our road trip to N. Cal in November.

I'm also getting anxious about Nathan starting daycare in September. I sometimes lay awake at night thinking about if he'll eat okay there and take enough naps. This is not so good because I need every minute of sleep I can get. Starting daycare will be a big change for him and I want it to go well.

Stomach bug

Since early Friday morning I've been sick, some stomach/intestinal thing. I kind of reminds me of the day Nathan was born, only I'm not pregnant. I really hope no one else gets sick, especially the baby.

Hp done

So I finished Harry Potter 7. Although on the whole I liked it, I was somewhat disappointed with, what I would call, a lack of originality in some of the devices and plot points JK used. I kept seeing other stories and novels in the Deathly Hallows. But over all it was quite a good series and if it brings more people to enjoy reading and/or the fantasy genre, all the better.

Nathan now has four teeth. Two middle ones on the bottom came in a few weeks ago, and recently the two top side teeth broke through. My mom says he's going to look like a vampire. He still wakes up every three hours at night, and in the last few days, Nathan has been taking over and hour to fall asleep. Last night it took close to three hours to sucessfully get him in bed. I hope it is a phase and he'll settle into some better sleep habits soon. But I'm still too much of a wuss to let him cry by himself at night.

Two days in Glendale

Nathan and I spent Wednesday and Thursday in Glendale since I had to take some training courses in Pasadena. It seemed easiest to just take him with me and spend the night at my parent's house. My mom was very nice and watched her grandson during the day. It was pretty stressful though as Nathan was clearly disoriented and distracted much of the time. He didn't eat or sleep as well, which also meant I didn't sleep well. The 1am earthquake Wednesday night didn't help either.

Seeing how he did on this mini-trip makes me a bit concerned about our planned camping trip at the end of this month. If being in an unfamiliar house (with a working kitchen, heating, and plumbing) was a challenge, I worry about how he'll do sleeping in a tent. At least when we go camping, I won't have to be anywhere, like a computer training course, any specific time and we can sleep in some.

HP movie 5

Gary and I got to see the fifth Harry Potter movie Sunday while his parents babysat. It was pretty good and I'm glad I saw it on the big screen. It was also nice to see Gary's folks.

I think the last movie I saw in theaters was Devil Wears Prada with my mom before Nathan was born. Carving out time and finding someone to watch the baby has definitely made going to the movies tough. On the other hand, these days I find less and less movies appealing enough that I want to see them in the theater. If one does interest me, I'm happy to wait and watch it at home on Neftlix. Not that I get much time to watch movies at home either, but at least with Netflix I have the pause button option.

Nathan's first bath in the big tub. He splashed less water onto the floor than in the small tub on the kitchen counter, but it bothered my back some. He sure loves those bathes.

Harry Potter restraint

So I consider myself a Harry Potter fan, but I have not had time to watch the latest movie or read book 7. I think I'll finally get to see the movie this weekend and I've been listening to book 5 on audiobook to prepare.

I also think I'll finish my mother's new novel, Rashi's Daughters book II - Miriam, this weekend and be able to start HP 7. She should feel flattered that I choose to finish her book before picking up Deathly Hallows. It has been a big challenge to avoid gossip and leaks on what happens in the last Harry Potter. I've done a pretty good job avoiding spoilers considering my parents, my coworkers, and my husband have all read the book.
