Monday evening Gary and I got back from our trip to Ashland Oregon and the Oregon Shakespear festival. Although Gary and I have been twice before, we got to introduce my parents and my brother to the town. The first play we saw was quite disappointing, but the other two were good. I got to go on a couple nice hikes although my ankle and knee were still bothering me. Down in the valley it was much too hot so we tried to stay indoors. Mostly it was just nice to have a couple days off of work to relax with my family.

Fall on front steps

Sunday I slipped on the front steps, twisted my ankle and scraped my knee and elbow. It was so stupid. I didn't even fall very far, the step was maybe eight inches off the ground. I probably would not have slipped if it wasn't for my flimsy soccer sandals; they have no traction. After all the sports I do, I get hurt the most just walking out my front door - Ugh.

So now I limp along and haven't been able to even approach my regular work out routine. I probably won't be able to run for a while. Yesterday I skipped my spin class and just went home after work since bending my knee repetitively was pretty painful. I'm going to try to swim this evening - hopefully I can still do that without much pain.

Happy Father's Day to Mike whose daughter, Katherine, was born yesterday. Congratulations to both Mike and Phaedra. The baby looks great! We can't wait to meet her.

June Tri

Saturday I raced in the final Championship series Triathlon. It was a full olympic distance (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run). It was great weather for a race, a bit overcast but not cold. I felt the race went wellMy dad came to the race to cheer me on. He also took a few pictures; hopefully I can post them soon. I found some photos of me online, running and biking. My time came in at 3:21:25 , not too different compared to the same race last year at 3:22:29.

Unfortunatly, I also sustained the a slight injury I've during the race. During the swim, about 5 minutes into it, I slammed my hand into another swimmer and jammed my ring finger pretty bad. It didn't stop me from finishing the race, but it hurt alot, swole up, and turned an ugly shade of purple. I went to Kaiser yesterday for and X-ray since it still looked pretty ugly, but I don't know if it is broken yet. It reminded me of this very amusing commercial.

One cool thing was since I registered in the Athena category, and I was the only one in that group, I got a medal for first place in my group. I figured that might happen. Although I love to do triathlons, I don't do it because I'm particularly talented or very fast, I just enjoy them. The only way I place is if there are three or less people in my category.

Espar

I stumbled upon this Chinese (?) Espar site by accident. I think it has something to do with civil engineering.

LAPL

I've been taking advantage of the local public library a few blocks from our house. Not for so much for books, but for books on CD.

Gary and I will often stroll over to the park and visit the library. He likes to browse the Sci-Fi shelves and he recently discovered their "graphic novel" section. They have all kinds of stuff these days, music CDs, movies on VHS and DVD, plus free computer and internet access.

I have gotten a couple "real" books from the library, mostly for my book club. The library is all high tech now and makes is so convenient with their online ordering and email alert system. You just browse the catalog on the web, pick which books you'd like to read, and when it arrives at your local branch, they shoot you an email to come pick it up.

Lately I'm picking up more books on CD. They help keep me company on my 30 minute commute. Most mornings I listen to the news on NPR, but on the drive back I have found I prefer to unwind and listen to a story. I got hooked after hearing the Harry Potter series - it was fabulous. And getting them from the library means I don't have to spend alot of money or worry about storage space. I love my library :)
