Rashi's Daughters

My mom (aka Maggie Anton) is about to have her first book Rashi's Daughters published! Hopefully it will be a big hit.

Election anticipation II

Here is a thought. It seems highly likely that the presidential election will be very close, probably too close to call without lots of recounts and legal battles. Also, Chief Justice Rehnquist recently was diagnosed with cancer and it is possible that he might not be returning to the bench. What a mess it would be if the supreme court was spilt 4-4 and the election could not be decided -even by the high court. Just something to think about....

Take me Out

TakeMeOut.jpg

Yesterday, for Gary's birthday (belated), my Mom took us to see Take Me Out, the 2002 Tony award winner for best play. Focusing on a studly African-American baseball superstar, the story shows the inner and outer conflicts the team deals with after he unexpectedly announces to the media that he is gay. You'd think it'd be really controversial and thought provoking, and for such an interesting a topic, I expected the play to be better. The plot seemed a bit disjointed. The gratuitous nudity and violence added nothing. But I'm glad I got to see it.

Margaret Hassan

Have you heard the news about Margaret Hassan? This morning driving to work I heard her pleading for her life - begging Tony Blair to withdraw troops from Iraq.

Now it is hard enough for me to see torture, killings, and horror on TV or the movies, but the real thing hits too hard. I was really struck by her plea. To actually hear her voice, the exhaustion, desperation and raw fear and think - this is a real person! and she is most likely going to have her head cut off! I hope the world isn't so totally numb by exposure to fiction, so that her plight is ignored.

Election anticipation

I have stated anticipating the election. I have already voted absentee ( and I sure hope I did everything correctly and my vote counts). I guess it is more important for local issues like the propositions. Make sure you vote "yes" on prop 71 - whose main goal is to make walmart provide its workers with health care. But I don't think it matters regarding the presidential race. I have a feeling that whatever happens, there will be alot of legal battles and uncertainty. From all the stories of voter fraud and confusion, there is no way this election can be won fair and square. It'll probably take some time after election day before the nation knows who won.

BCC Webmadame

bcc_building.gif
I have started my fourth stint as a web madame. In order to help the over-worked president of my synagogue, I have taken on responsibility for maintaining the BCC website. There are alot of improvements, both aesthetic and practical, that I plan to make. I'm excited about helping my temple get some better visibility on the web. Feel free to check out the current site - I'd love to hear feedback.

DC conference

I was in our nation's capital (what's the difference between a capitol and a capital) for the last few days. Once again, the National Society of Genetic Counselors held their annual conference there. The conference was very good, one of the most interesting and educational I'd been to.

Gary came along. Since he'd never been to the east coast before, he got to be a tourist. We also got to see a great show - Cirque du Soleil. The tough part about it, was while I got to enjoy the conference, work was piling up at home.
