State Faire

Yesterday I went to the California State Fair. I got to see a sword swallower, the largest rodent in the world, art exhibits, cloned cows, newborn piglets, a hypnotist, fireworks and deep friend twinkies. It was all very interesting.

River City Women's Tri

My mom came up to visit this weekend. We went shopping to check out bridesmaid dresses, saw the movie Whale Rider, and hung out with my aunt's family. Whale Rider was well done, uplifting, and very emtional. I don't remeber having cried so much at a film before.

Also, this Sunday I competed in the River City Women's triathlon. It was a halfie, my shortest race this season, but it was my first race on my lovely new bicylce. It went really well; I was pretty fast; I came in 71 out of 262. But the best part was having Mom and Gary come out to cheer me on. It felt very encouraging to know they supported me.

Seabiscuit

This weekend was full of activities. In addition to having dinner with my Aunt's family Friday, going on a hike Saturday, going grocery shopping Saturday, jogging 7 miles Sunday, and playing a seven hour dungeons and dragons game Sunday, Gary and I saw Seabiscuit Saturday evening.

Seabiscuit was pretty good. Nothing too fancy, just straight forward story telling. It was a very well crafted film - the scenes were set up well, good acting, good writing. Although I wouldn't go see it again, I do recommend the movie.

Mars

This should be a great week for amature astronomers. The full moon is tomorrow, a meteor shower is all this week, and this month Mars will be the closest to Earth in 60,000 years. So step outside at night and look up.

Bike scrape

Yesterday, after work, I took my lovely new bicylce out for my first real ride, and wouldn't you know it, I had a little accident. I didn't even get out of the parking lot before falling. I was getting ready to exit the driveway, had to stop, but couldn't get my feet out of the pedals in time. My legs were trapped, so I just fell over onto my side. Although I scraped up my forearm and leg, I wounded my confidence more than my body. The rest of the ride was okay, but I felt a bit shaky. Hopefully, I'll get used to riding it soon.

Recall Rant

I think this whole business with the recall election is wrong. First of all, Davis certainly could be doing a better job and our state is in deep dodo, but almost every state in the union is in the same situation. I'm not sure anyone else could do better. Second, California voters elected Davis not too long ago. I thought that meant he gets to be governor for four years, not for however long voters want. Also, it seems unfair that just because Darrell Issa wants to be governor, he can try to buy the office and railroad the electoral system. Finally, the state is in enough red ink to drown a squid, why hold an election that will cost about 30 million dollars?

Tri in Rain

This weekend I completed my first triathlon in the rain. It was an interesting experience. Some folks actually tried to keep dry. But I figured, you're going swimming, and then you sweat alot, so who cares. The only thing that worried me was the thunder and lightening when I was driving out to the race, but the storm lessend to just normal rain during the race. It was alot of fun. I think I finished under 2 hours; my exact time should be posted soon. It seems I improved by about 5 minutes since the last race.

The next time I race, I should go much faster thanks to an early birthday present. My parents generoulsly agreed to buy me a wonderful new road bike. I went yesterday to buy it. I ended up getting a brand new Trek 1200; it is so pretty and so fast. I can't wait to get some milage in.

Also this weekend, Gary and I saw the documentary Winged Migration. It has some breathtaking scenary and visuals of the birds in flight. Very impresive camera work. The narative and editing were lacking. But a pretty good film.
