Following my current obsession with Pirates of the Caribbean, I invite you to discover your true pirate name.
Also here is a tidbit about the upcoming sequel. Apparently, Mr. Depp is under contract to do one more.
"Technical civilization is man's conquest of space. It is a triumph frequently achieved by sacrificing an essential ingredient of existence, namely, time. In technical civilization, we expend time to gain space. To enhance our power in the world of space is our main objective. Yet to have more does not mean to be more. The power we attain in the world of space terminates abruptly at the borderline of time."
-The opening paragraph of The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel (see my current read).
This weekend Gary and I flew down to So Cal to spend some time with family and friends. I was most looking forward to seeing my Grandpa George in Santa Barbara. He lives in such a beautiful and relaxing place. It is always a pleasure to visit. Also, I went to see Pirates for the third time with my good friend Cathy and my family. Ah, I love that movie. I'm glad that it is doing so well at the box office.

Yesterday I joined a group of coworkers to go white water rafting on the Middle Fork of the American River. I've been rafting a couple times before and have always loved it. This trip was no exception. It was really fun. One of the rapids, called tunnel shoot, had you race down rapids, while a different tributary poors water down onto you and then you shoot out into an old miners tunnel through the moutain. It was so amazing. At times we were too hot (over 100 that day) or too cold (the water was from snow pack). It was also tough to wake up at 5 am and not get back home until about 8pm. But it was such a blast. One of the benefits of livin in Sacramento - there are like 6 local rivers to go rafting on.
Last night I saw Pirates of the Caribbean. Although I had heard good things about it, I was skeptical and expected it to be either cheesey or gory. But I must say, it is a really good movie. It had the right amount of action, adventure, acting, and romance. The writing is excellent. If you have not been to Disneyland on the ride, you will still really enjoy the movie. If you have, and consider yourself familar with the ride, it will so much more amusing. Jonny Depp steals the show - he is brilliant. Also, Orlando Bloom is to die for - yummy. I highly recommend it and can't wait to go see it again.
I spent the weekend sick at home. Friday afternoon I started feeling yucky and by the evening my whole body hurt and I just wanted to sleep. Saturday I had a low fever, a bit over 100. I had a very hard time sleeping Saturday night. By Sunday afternoon I was feeling better.
What a waste of a weekend.
Well I'm done with jury duty. I was never even called nor asked any question while on the jury panel. It was a case against this fellow who reportedly was high on meth while driving. When the police tried to pull him over, he led them on a 15 mile car case and causing a fatal car crash. So they had to ask all these questions about if you have strong feelings about drug use, have you ever been i a car wreck, do you have biases toward police officers, etc. Overall, jury duty wasn't so bad, just very tedious. I was actually glad to go back to work.
I'm still going to jury duty. Harry Potter is about half way done.
Yesterday I got a chance to start reading the newest Harry Potter book while on jury duty. So far the book is just okay. It could benefit from some more editing. I don't remember much from the other books, so it is a bit tough to just jump right in. But I haven't gotten too far into it yet.
I've only ever been to jury duty once before, and then I just sat around all day in the jury room. This time, I actually got on a jury panel right from the start. It is a kinda important case, so the lawyers are taking their sweet time picking the jurors. It is so tedious! I can't really read too much, becuase I'm supposed to be paying attention to the judges long winded speeches. I go back on Monday. We'll see what happens.
If you are going to be in the Portland area this weekend, how about attending The Ringer, a Rocky Horror style showing of the Two Towers.
BitofEarth.com describes the event as "a fun, quirky, irreverent showing of The Two Towers with a twist, perfect for all those Northwest Rings fans who are tired of being told to sit down, shut up, and keep their hairy feet to themselves during their favourite movie." They recommend dressing up as your favorite hobbit, dwarf, or elf. If you want to participate on stage they still need a Gimli, a Legolas, an Aragorn, and a Sam. They already have an Eowyn, a Frodo, a Gollum, a Treebeard, and a Merry.
Ah, I'd love to go. But alas, I already made plans to watch Rivercats baseball.
