Hypercholesterolemia

Familial hypercholesterolemia is an autosomal dominant disorder that causes severe elevations in total cholesterol (average cholesterol levels in affected patients are about 500) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc). It occurs in approximately 1 per 500 persons worldwide and is associated with a high risk for premature coronary artery disease.
