Water for elephants

I read Water for Elephants for book club. It is a delightful depression era story of young man who almost finishes vet school and ends up working for a traveling circus. He falls in love with the wife of the ring master and a managerie of wild animals including an extraordinarily loyal elephant. It thought the story was great fun. An 8 out of 10.

Girl in Hyacinth Blue

I read Girl in Hyacinth Blue for blook club. It is a series of short stories over a span of centuries about owners of a mysterious Vermeer painting. A few of the stories were great, but most weren't that captivating. A film called The Red Violin did a much better job with this type of story. I give it a 5 out of 10.
