Postcards

Another bookclub pick,
Postcards by Annie Proulx follows the downward spiral of a 1950's era family. The main character forces himself into exile after the accidental death of his girlfriend and subsequently can only maintain shallow and fleeting connections to people and places. The other family members similarly end up in bitter situations. I was interested this book after knowing she had written Brokeback Mountain, both the short story and the script. Post cards has similar overtones of "life sucks." I give it a 6 out of 10

Year of Magical Thinking

I read
The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didione for book club. It is a nonfiction account of an upclass writer's experience with the pain of grief the year after her husband dies. It was an honest and raw account of how she struggles to cope. I can't say I enjoyed it, and it mostly made me worry about the health of my husband and how sad I would feel if he died. I give it a 5 out of 10.
